Tribal Voice

The next Community Song is Tribal Voice (words and music by Mandaway Yunupingu and Yothu Yindi, originally released by Mushroom Music Pty Ltd). We will be singing the version published in ABC Sing Book 2000 (Australian Broadcasting Commission 2000) in which a few of the original lyrics have been modified. Here is a note about the song, taken from the book:

“Tribal Voice” is the title track from Yothu Yindi’s second album, which featured the worldwide hit, “Treaty”. Yothu Yindi is made up of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal musicians, and they promote the sharing of cultures. Their blend of modern rock and indigenous music has created a unique sound.

One Night the Moon

Students in Years 4-6 watched three clips from the film One Night the Moon. This 2001 film tells a story through music and has very few spoken lines. The story is set in 1932 and the music was written by three Australians with different backgrounds: Paul Kelly, a singer-songwriter who grew up in Adelaide, Mairead Hannan, who has Irish ancestry and Kev Carmody, an Indigenous Australian from the Murri people in Queensland.

The clips have been rated PG and can be found here.

Absolutely Everybody

This song, originally released by Australian singer/songwriter Vanessa Amorosi, has a great message: no matter who we are, we all need and deserve love and respect. We like to have our own ideas and “be ourselves” and we learn to respect that others don’t always feel the same way we do.

We will be singing the version published in ABC Sing Book, 2005, which is a bit shorter than the original version.

Community Songs

At each assembly, the school sings the National Anthem, Advance Australia Fair, and the Glengarry Primary School Song, Mean Machine. The words of the school song are displayed in the Assembly Area.

During Class Music, we prepare a song for the whole school community to sing towards the end of the assembly.

Click on the Categories tab, Community Songs (on the right of this page), to see which songs we are singing.

Narrabundah

Absolutely Everybody

Tribal Voice

Aboriginal music in class

This week, we were getting used to the sound of aboriginal language. We enjoyed singing “Narrabundah” and listened to the drum, didgeridoo and tapping sticks in the background of the music. The song is Track 10 on Sing, Jam & Jive (Susie & Phil Present) by Susie Davies-Splitter & Phil Splitter.

It is available on iTunes – just click here.
